The Women’s Center at Progressive Radiology
Saving Lives through Progressive Imaging

We are pleased to offer this convenient location dedicated entirely to breast health including the most advanced imaging technology available. Our on-site, knowledgeable staff will assist you in scheduling and coordinating your exam(s). You can be confident that our highly trained technologists will perform your exams in a private warm room with compassion and care. You will leave knowing that your exam will be interpreted by a subspecialty trained, board certified radiologist and the results will be communicated to your medical provider immediately. Our services include:

3D Tomosynthesis. This revolutionary mammography technology allows the radiologist to identify structures and abnormalities in the breast with greater ease as there is less overlapping tissue. During this exam, multiple images of the breast are acquired at different angles using no more radiation and no longer compression time than a conventional 2D mammogram. This technology has been shown to result in a 40% increase in detection of invasive breast cancers and reduced callback rate. We utilize tomosynthesis technology for both Screening mammograms and Diagnostic mammograms.

To Prepare: Do not wear deodorant, talcum powder, or lotion under your arms. These can appear on your exam as abnormal calcium spots. You may bring these products with you to apply upon completion of your exam.
Please obtain your prior mammograms and make them available to us at the time of your current exam. Our radiologist is looking for any subtle change in the way your breasts look over time. Without the previous studies, you may be asked to come back for additional views, causing unnecessary stress and delay in diagnosis.

Breast Ultrasound. This is a safe and valuable diagnostic tool that uses sound waves to evaluate the breast. It can determine whether a breast mass contains fluid (is a cyst) or is solid. Because it uses no radiation, it is helpful in the evaluation of women with breast masses who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 30 years of age and would not ordinarily undergo mammography. It is also an important adjunct to mammography in helping to identify abnormalities.

Breast MRI. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be used to screen women at high risk for breast cancer, evaluate the extent of cancer following diagnosis, or further evaluate abnormalities seen on mammography. Breast MRI does not use ionizing radiation, and it is the best method for determining whether breast implants have ruptured. For the procedure you will lie face down on a special table with openings to accommodate your breasts and allow them to be imaged without compression. If a contrast material will be used the technologist will insert an intravenous (IV) catheter into a vein in your hand or arm. Images will be taken before and after the injection.

Genetic Testing. If you are identified as a high-risk patient, we can perform a quick, non-invasive saliva test in our office. This can identify gene abnormalities such as BRCA1 & 2 that can increase your risk of breast and other cancers. Please inquire about this very important and potentially life-saving test.

For your convenience, we also provide the following at The Women’s Center:

*Current screening recommendations from the American Cancer Society:

  • A mammogram is recommended yearly starting at age 40, and continuing for as long as a woman is in good health.
  • Women should know how their breasts normally look and feel and report any breast change promptly to their health care provider.
  • Clinical breast exam (CBE) should be performed every 3 years for women in their 20s and 30s and every year for women 40 and over.
  • Certain women, due to their family history, genetic make-up, or other factors, should be screened with breast MRI in addition to mammography. Please discuss your history with your medical provider and decide together whether you should have additional tests or begin testing at an earlier age.

*This information may change over time with advancements in breast cancer research, therefore we urge you to consult the American Cancer Society website (www.cancer.org) periodically for new updates.
